After the recent update I lost my wallpaper so started using a live wallpaper I liked. I used this briefly when I first got phone then decided to turn it off in case it sucked up battery.

Anyone know if these are a big hit on resources - specifically battery drain?

Thanks

It can depend on the wallpaper. I've used one of the native HTC live wallpapers since I got my One. My boyfriend tested out a Mario Live wallpaper from the market. Mine I haven't seen any real battery drain. The Mario live one sucked his battery.

If you find one you like, give it a shot. If it's killing your battery, then you may have to part ways with it. Sad

The one I'm running now is a stock one - Galaxy - doesn't seem to bad overall . I've been unplugged since about 7am or so and have about 85% battery left.

Speaking of battery it's been sleeping for a little over 3 hours now and the up:awake ratio is about 10:1 or 3hrs 20mins up time and 20 minutes awake time. I'm gonna assume based on the little I've read about this ratio that this halfway decent?

Yeah, I'd say that's decent. It averages out to about 5.5 mins per hour. I was actually testing mine for this stat last week. On a fresh hard reset One, I was coming out with about 2 minues of awake time per hour. Once you add apps, emails, etc 5.5 mins it's too hugely bad.

So does the live wallpaper still run and use CPU when the phone is locked/asleep ? When I look at the battery usage, in which category does the live wall paper usage fall ?

What i've been doing is monitoring the battery usage of my display, then i decide whether i'll keep a live wallpaper or change it..

from the homescreen hit menu, settings, scroll down to "about phone", battery, battery use, and check out your "display" percentage

It shouldn't be running when the screen is off. Shouldn't being the key word there. If it's wallpaper developed by a 3rd party, there's always the potential for coding issues.

In the battery usage it should be under the Android System usage. Live Wallpaper is an Andorid function rather than a Display function. Display is for the screen brightness, etc. There's no easy way to separate it out. I'd just give it a shot if there's one you like and if your battery drains faster, then you may need to try something else.

Ahh I got ya.. that makes it so much harder to monitor battery usage, would be nice is they had an additional percentage just for live wallpapers

I'd love it if they broke the whole "Android" down into the services as well. That way I'd know if it was the mail draining so much vs. the wallpaper vs. the 3g radio vs. blah blah. You get my drift. Wink

Actually, I've noticed the Live Wallpaper being broken out as it's own entry in the battery usage stats when it hits 2%.
