Author Topic: HTC Sync hashing my Outlook contacts. Help?  (Read 5762 times)

I'm having a lot of problems with using HTC Sync with my One XE when synching my Outlook contacts and I wonder if anyone can offer some insight.

I did successfully (sort of) synch all 250 or so contacts. The problem is that for a great many of them it has hashed their names. What's come through is (for example) just the first name or just the last name. It's particularly happening for businesses. For example, a restaurant that in Outlook was "Regal on Roe (Dimsum)" came through as just "(Dimsum)". "Hog's Breath Cafe" came through as "Breath". The worst of it was that it had not only hashed the names on the One XE, it had done the same thing to my Outlook contacts!

I changed the default in HTC Sync so that when synching the version that was the most recent was the one that was given priority, went through and fixed all the names on Outlook, synched again... same thing happened. Some survived this time that hadn't before but many were again damaged. I couldn't see any pattern to the ones that survived.

I thought perhaps that it was necessary to fix them on the phone, so I tried changing the "Regal on Roe" entry on the phone to "Regal on Roe Dimsum" and added a photo at the same time. When I synched, the version on the phone stayed correct but the version on Outlook now calls it "Regal on Dimsum"! But the photo did come through.

I don't want to do anymore without understanding why it's happening. Has anyone managed to sort this out and can tell me how to enter names that will survive synching?

In case it's relevant – I'm running Win 64 Home Premium, Android Vers 2.3.4 and Outlook 2007.

I strongly recommend abandoning the archaic Outlook and using Gmail. Yes it takes a little time to manually copy those contacts, but after you're done life is soooo much easier. Your contacts will appear on your phone automatically. Addresses will sync to Google maps and Navigation, texting will sync to contacts, if you add photos of your contacts they will display for incoming calls, the list goes on...

Well... I'll certainly consider that option but I'm rather reluctant. Firstly because of the work involved in copying 250 contacts, each of which has multiple fields (not just name and phone). Secondly because I am required to use Outlook at work. Admittedly the phone is a personal one and I'm going to be sync'ing with the database at home not at work, but it's still far easier to share some contacts between work and home if I'm using the same software on both. Thirdly, and most importantly, because of concerns about the way that Gmail and Google will use the information I post. If you read their "privacy" policy it has holes in it that you can drive a truck through. I am not at all confident of the data being secure.

I will definitely bear it in mind as a viable solution though, and I do thank you for the reply. :-)
