: Screen Capture (updated 9/27/10)
: aledc78 April 02, 2010, 10:57:11 PM
What apps are there for screen capture?

Can Android do this out of the box?

Thanks

(9/27/10) UPDATE: With the latest update to Android, version 3.29, ShootMe no longer requires a rooted phone. ShootMe is available in the Market and AppBrain. All you do is install it and whenever you want to take a screenshot, give the phone a really good shake or shout. So the information that follows this post is no longer necessary.

AppBrain link: http://www.appbrain.com/app/shootme-%28screen-grabber%29/com.bw.picme.local (http://www.appbrain.com/app/shootme-%28screen-grabber%29/com.bw.picme.local)

Hat tip to stringbean for the info!

I dont know if i will root my One... I have always been afraid of bricking my phones!  :(

: Re: Screen Capture

Ok, then someone hopefully will make a "How to safely root your One" thread.

Until then... I hope we find a cool screen capture app. Simplicity is the key!

For 1.5 the only way I know of is with ddms in the Android sdk.  Root is required too.

Well, you're right and wrong there Z.  :-*    You can do it with the ddms from the Android SDK, but it does not require rooting your phone.  I've done it plenty times with my Hero and works like a charm.  :P

That's exactly how I do it.  I love how to articles on items that have not been released yet.  I see no reason why it wouldn't work on the One, but funny still.

I thought the same thing, but still felt the info was pertinent.

Somebody has to come up with a way of doing this on the phone without a computer... There are sooo many of these for WinMo, BlackBerry, WebOS (right out of the box!)

Well I guess we'd have to ask pingpongboss or Chiitown Kruger since android communities are reporting that One's are indeed capable of using this app without the root.

Yes, this is one of the few times where a glitch works in the user's favor! It seems that only the One is able to use ShootMe without root. No one really knows why. But I'm loving ShootMe.

So it turns out that the One's framebuffer is not as protected as it was before, which allows ShootMe to capture your screen without root permissions.

Also, ShootMe is a free app on the Market, no point in downloading it before hand.

: Re: Screen Capture
: Danielk0582 June 22, 2010, 10:57:44 PM
Yes ...shootme is the app I use on my One for screen capture. You can set your task killer to not kill the shootme app, and you can shake your phone for anything. I busted out the "Draw!" app and drew something for my girl.....shook my phone...then sent her the picture in a text message =). When you snap pictures with Shootme, it creates a folder on your SDcard called "shootme" with all your pics in there. That folder will also be in your phone gallery.

Happy shooting haha

You obviously have not updated your phone today.  It removes the ability to root and disables picme/shootme.

It's not longer working for me either. :( It's always said in the app description on the market that it required root, but before this update it worked without it. I'm just crossing my fingers the dev may be able to find a way to get it working for us without us having to root.

Ive looked in the marketplace and i cant seem to find an app that can be used on a non-rooted phone to take screen shots. if anyone has one that they use or know of one, it would be greatly appreciated.

: Re: App for Taking Screen Shots

: Re: Screen Capture
: BOO5TED July 07, 2010, 12:01:15 AM
Hey guys try this and see if it works.  It's not an app but better than nothing.

Step 1: Enable USB Debugging
On your Android phone, go to Settings, Applications, and then Development. Check the checkbox for "USB debugging."

Step 2: Download the Android SDK
Download the SDK for your platform here (http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html). Go ahead and plugin your Android handset into a USB port on your computer, if it is not plugged in already.

Step 3: Run DDMS
You need to open up the DDMS application from within the "tools" folder in the Android SDK's main folder.

After DDMS launches, select your handset from the menu on the left (it should be the only device listed). You might see an error message, but the debug tool should be loaded. Then, click CTRL-S on your keyboard.  This will bring up the "Device Screen Capture" interface. From here, a static image is captured from what is appearing on your handset. You can save the image (nicely defaulted as PNG) and then refresh to your heart's content to grab updated or different screenshots from your phone.

: Re: Screen Capture
: Danielk0582 July 07, 2010, 08:03:53 AM
I can't get it to work yet :( .....I've been trying since yesterday.

: Re: Screen Capture
: drschwartz July 07, 2010, 09:15:06 AM
When I launch DDMS (Dalvik Debug Monitor Rev 5), I don't see my One in the Device drop-down menu.

  • I'm connected as a Disk Drive, is that correct?
  • Is it the Device menu on the menu bar that I'm supposed to find my One listed (you only mention 'menu on the left')?

TIA,
David

: Re: Screen Capture
: Danielk0582 July 07, 2010, 09:22:38 AM
When I open it, all I see is a command prompt box pop up for like half a second and its gone. I don't even see that window you showed in that pic. =( I probably missed something stupid lol

: Re: Screen Capture
: drschwartz July 07, 2010, 09:32:22 AM
I've got nothing in that list and all controls are (reasonably) disabled. How are you connecting to the PC (I'm using Disk Drive)? Also, are you running Software number 1.47.651.1?

David

Make sure you have usb debugging enabled and I have mine set to charge only.

Yes, I've turned USB Debugging on and I'm now connected as Charge Only. Still no dice.

Very frustrating.....

: Re: Screen Capture
: drschwartz July 07, 2010, 11:09:20 AM
I wonder if it would be worth re-installing the SDK? BTW, I'm not getting any error messages.

: Re: Screen Capture
: svargas05 July 08, 2010, 02:16:04 PM
Seems like an awful lot to do for a screen capture...

I'll probably just wait until something better is released or when the quick root is fixed.

: Re: Screen Capture
: drschwartz July 08, 2010, 03:33:31 PM
So I'm still trying to set up the SDK for screencapturing. A colleague suggested that I need the correct USB drivers. I downloaded the drivers and I'm trying to update the driver of the ADB device in Device Manager (Windows XP SP3). When I attempt to direct the wizard to the driver directory, it fails to find anything to install.

Any suggestions?

TIA,
David

Thanks guys!

Now that it's working, can anyone tell me the service used by Sync so I can disable it as I have no intention of using the app and don't want it running all the time? (I assume that uninstalling the app will also uninstall the USB driver.)

Yes, I want it all!   ;D

Mine was doing that for a while too. Then one day I said, I've GOTTA try this one more time. I found this link that gives a bit more of an explanation than boosted did on here. So give it a shot. Gotta install .net framework and java se development kit too.

OMG, could you please be a bigger crybaby? I asked you ONCE to resize it because you were posting a bunch of screen shots that were huge. Resizing them to a decent size only takes a minute and is a courtesy to other users who have different screen sizes/resolutions. For those with lower resolutions/smaller screens, those screen shots are rather huge.

Me the crybaby? Sorry you have me confused with yourself dear...your the one always crying about anything and everything. I help people out on here, then you come along with your 2cents (complaints). So I warn people...no harm there :)

I didn't say anything about you following me around...I don't know where that even came from. I have a life besides this website. If your on here all day lookin for stuff to say, then go ahead and be lifeless. I don't give a flying rats a$$. All I know is, whenever I post something on here, there you go complaining about something I say or post. I'm not sayin it's ONLY me....but its steadily on me, and for little nonsense. If its not part of the rules and its just something of your own opinion then you know what....when it comes to me, keep it to yourself. We won't have any problems that way.

Is there a working screenshot app that you know of for the One?

Its a joke that the ONLY way to take screenshots unrooted is via an SDK and while attached to the PC... oh goody.. lets haul around that PC! :P

even my blackberry at OS4.5 had some limited options, but that's a pretty old OS now and I did find an app, this is Android, its supposed to be far more superior than ANY OS!!! :P (and on the planet's fastest phone, unless Japan or China hasn't come out with something faster by now).

The reason behind making it difficult for an app to take a screenshot is security.  Imagine if an app writer was able to take a screenshot in the background and send it to themselves while say, you were logging into your banking app or website?  It isn't that it can't do it, its that the developers disallow it.  The security hole that was open when we first got our One's that allowed us to have shoot-me work without root initially, is the same hole that was used to gain root.  Think about it...

If that's the case then why do the devs allow us to install 3rd party apps if security threats are that legit? I agree it is a security risk, heck... installing shapewriter could be a security risk... the dev who wrote that app for all we know could be keylogging :P (yes I got the warning when installing it outside of the market, btw I hate shapewriter, I want to try swype :().

I really hate that you have to use the sdk.  I am by no means the most tech savvy person but this is what i did.
Download sdk and extract to new folder
run the setup and get a fail
force setup
go to tools, ddms
now when it show's devices, nothing, blank
I have debugging on and checked my drivers all fine but still wont be seen?

Any ideas?

No. Every time i connect to computer the only things i check is debugging and disc drive
When i run the sdk setup i have a list of about 15 installed packs but when i go to Virtual devices nothing shows up.

From their if i go back to tools, ddms i get a quick flash of a screen and then nothing again.
Oh yea i have Vista too dont know if that matters

Try going into charge only mode rather than disk drive. I don't think I've done it in disk drive, but I know it's worked in charge only.

What apps are there for screen capture?

Can Android do this out of the box?

Thanks

Shoot Me works unrooted after the 3.29 update.

Can you elaborate? What is the ddms from the Android SDK?
