Its really not that complicated when you get it set up. And its sooo worth it to take the time to do it. Lets take things one at a time.
First, go to your Gmail web account. Go to the Labels tab in the settings. Hide any Imap folders that you don't want to see.
here gmail had the option to hide or remove the label, and i chose to remove them. i don't understand why they were there in the first place, they just complicated things and added redundancy...i had to delete things twice. if they are necessary and come back, i'll leave them. are they necessary?
(I'm assuming you did this part but will repeat it just in case.) In K9, open the Gmail account. hit Menu, then More, Settings, Account Settings, scroll down to Incoming Server, then scroll down and make sure all of your folders point to the [Gmail] folders, not the Imap (which won't have an [Imap] in front. If you were still seeing your Imap trash folder, you didn't change it in the settings correctly. Make sure you hit Next when you are done rather than the back key.
i did what you said here. but i have a question: what is the difference between the labels "[Gmail] Sent" and "Sent"? also, why don't my other custom gmail labels (like i have one for "registrations") have the "[Gmail]" prefix? you said the Imap ones won't have [imap] prefix, but neither do my existing custom labels. does that mean they are imap?? and wtf is imap, anyway?
Now go back to your K9 inbox. Click more, Folder list, menu, folders, Refresh Folders. Then click menu, Folders and Display all folders. You should see all of the label folders you have set up.
Now, there are two kinds of folders, 1st class and 2nd class. You can set any folder to either one, or to no class. I set all of my folders that I want to see as 1st class, and set stuff like my archive or all mail folders as second class. Then in the settings, I have it display only the 1st class folders. You can always go back to the folder options like we did above and have it display both or all if you want.
To set the folder class, click on the folder. Hit menu, more, settings, folder settings. Folder display class is what you will see by default. Back in the account settings where you changed the incoming server settings, you can set the push and poll folders, having it check all, only 1st class, only 2nd class, only 1st and 2nd, or all (some folders are auto set with no class unless you change it).
i did what you said here except for editing classes. i don't really understand what "class" means in this context or why i'd want to set a folder to 1st or 2nd.
i have other questions about K9 too. I set the color blue for my gmail mail. why do some emails have a darker shade to the little tab on the left and other emails have a lighter shade? in the inbox list of emails, why are some white and some entirely shaded? what does "polling" mean? it says "polling off" at the top, is that good?
thanks for your help.
