Gmail - although disappointing, i still need this in order to manage my labels and everything right.  is there another app that lets you manage your gmail inbox better?

Note: This thread was originally part of the What are some must have apps/widgets on an Android phone? thread. Since it became more K9 specific, I split this part off. I think more will find help with the setup it that way. - Khassy

Khassy,

Ok, I'm going to try k9 then. I'm sick of deleting stuff, and then having to delete it again (IMAP/trash label) in gmail.

I don't have Bluetooth on my computers, plus awesome drop let's friends send me stuff without requiring Bluetooth or anything special.  And Gmote allows access to my computer files from anywhere, beyond the 30ft range of Bluetooth.

The ringtone I have now is 32 seconds long, and I never get to hear the whole thing. I always answer my calls before the entire ring plays...unless I'm not near phone at all so I wouldn't hear the song anyway.

I didn't know shazam had a 5 song/month limit.  In that case, soundhound sounds better because of the singing and humming.  Add whistling, and I'll buy it!  Lol.

The white pages thing sounds the same as the one I use.  if I run into problems, I can switchto the one you listed.  that's why I like this thread.  list of alternate apps if I don't like an app I have later!

When I was trying out TuneIn last night I set up presets.  I really like this app.  Only complaint is the time it takes to connect to a station but that should be expected, I think.

Oh, well with most songs, the first 10-15 seconds haven't gotten to the melody yet, or its just an intro rhythm, etc.  I use ringdroid to find and isolate the part of a song that is most suitable as a ring tone, which is usually in the break when the melody comes in.  I've also used it to isolate funny phrases from comedy bits.  Like zach galifinakis shouting "HE AIN'T GONNA EMAIL YOU!" or antoine dobson singing "we gon find you, we gon fiiiind you" from that funny YouTube video.

right now I'm using the melody from De La Soul's "Keepin the Faith" which already sounds lile a ringtone.   Ringdroid basically lets you sample a song and create a loop.  DJ's would appreciate these abilities.

I'm excited to try this k9 app.  Hopefully I can do it today.  I have a question, how do you disable the other app then? Just turn off the notifications, right?  I'm just hoping to avoid interference.

Installed K9 Mail, went into those settings to make sure the folders buttons went to the right label... omfg, K9 Mail is about 729 times more complicated than I am even remotely interested in dealing with.  Settings and settings and settings, layers deep.

Anyway, I did what you said, Khassy.  But they only had 5 folder buttons there (archive, sent, trash, spam, etc) and I have like 10 gmail labels.  I matched up the few they have there, and I still get the " [imap/trash] " thing in my gmail account for the emails I delete with K9.

It's frustrating that Google doesn't make their own apps for their own OS work like normal. I can't even edit my gmail settings through a browser. The screen greys out.  I just want full and total access to gmail on the phone to be identical functionality as the web (pc).

Khassy, thanks for your help.

Ok, I need to be able to see this web site on a computer while I do the stuff on the phone.  I'm ay work now and probably won't get the time to do this until tomorrow or Monday.  I'll get back to you then!

Its really not that complicated when you get it set up. And its sooo worth it to take the time to do it. Lets take things one at a time.

First, go to your Gmail web account. Go to the Labels tab in the settings. Hide any Imap folders that you don't want to see.

here gmail had the option to hide or remove the label, and i chose to remove them.  i don't understand why they were there in the first place, they just complicated things and added redundancy...i had to delete things twice.   if they are necessary and come back, i'll leave them.  are they necessary?

(I'm assuming you did this part but will repeat it just in case.) In K9, open the Gmail account. hit Menu, then More, Settings, Account Settings, scroll down to Incoming Server, then scroll down and make sure all of your folders point to the [Gmail] folders, not the Imap (which won't have an [Imap] in front. If you were still seeing your Imap trash folder, you didn't change it in the settings correctly. Make sure you hit Next when you are done rather than the back key.

i did what you said here.  but i have a question:  what is the difference between the labels "[Gmail] Sent" and "Sent"?  also, why don't my other custom gmail labels (like i have one for "registrations") have the "[Gmail]" prefix?    you said the Imap ones won't have [imap] prefix, but neither do my existing custom labels.  does that mean they are imap??   and wtf is imap, anyway?

Now go back to your K9 inbox. Click more, Folder list, menu, folders, Refresh Folders. Then click menu, Folders and Display all folders. You should see all of the label folders you have set up.

Now, there are two kinds of folders, 1st class and 2nd class. You can set any folder to either one, or to no class. I set all of my folders that I want to see as 1st class, and set stuff like my archive or all mail folders as second class. Then in the settings, I have it display only the 1st class folders. You can always go back to the folder options like we did above and have it display both or all if you want.

To set the folder class, click on the folder. Hit menu, more, settings, folder settings. Folder display class is what you will see by default. Back in the account settings where you changed the incoming server settings, you can set the push and poll folders, having it check all, only 1st class, only 2nd class, only 1st and 2nd, or all (some folders are auto set with no class unless you change it).

i did what you said here except for editing classes.  i don't really understand what "class" means in this context or why i'd want to set a folder to 1st or 2nd.

i have other questions about K9 too.   I set the color blue for my gmail mail.  why do some emails have a darker shade to the little tab on the left and other emails have a lighter shade?    in the inbox list of emails, why are some white and some entirely shaded?  what does "polling" mean?    it says "polling off" at the top, is that good?

thanks for your help. Smiley

I think I understand the classes thing.  I haven't marked any as 1st or 2nd, but if I only want to see whats in my Inbox, then all I need to do is select that folder from the folder list, right?  If yes, then thats how viewing all the other folders would work too, right?    If that is the case, then I would never even see my Trash folder (regardless of class) unless i selected it from the folder list, right??

If i'm understanding this correctly, and i assigned my Trash as 2nd class, AND said to not Display 2nd class folders, then "Trash" would simply be removed from my Folders List, correct?   "Trash" wouldn't even be an option to view?

Ok, about the Inbox and the shades and everything...
See my attached image.
The Orange arrow is pointing to an unshaded email with plain text and a light blue Left Tab
The Green arrow is pointing to a blue shaded email with bold text and a dark blue Left Tab
The Red arrow is pointing to a blue shaded email with a plain text and a light blue Left Tab
The Yellow Arrow is pointing to an unshaded email with bold text and a dark blue Left Tab

the variations are:   shaded/unshaded    plain/bold text    light blue/dark blue tab
These can apparently occur in any combination, as my inbox shows.

Any clue what they mean?   I noticed that bold text seems to denote an email is unread, and it turns to plain text after opening.  I can't tell what the other flavors mean.

Khassy,

I just wanted to let you know I seem to have gotten it all worked out, finally!  I also had to go into K-9's settings and tell it to 'delete from server' when i delete an email within K-9.

Now it seems to behave fully synced with Gmail.  I have a better gmail experience than with the gmail app!

Thanks so much!

Khassy,

Does K9 work with exchange servers?  I would like to replace the stock email client that I use for both pop and exchange email.

thanks.

Cool, I'll check it out.  Thanks.

Edit: I couldn't get K9 to work with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.  I even found this help file, but to no avail. : http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/wiki/K9MailAndExchange

I ended up uninstalling it  Sad

The mail ap th came stock on the One works well with MS Exchange server and was a snap to set up.  Unfortuantely it is very limited in features that you would expect from even a basic mail ap.

I'm using K-9, but there is one setting I cannot find.  That is the setting that has the client retieve from a pop3 server, but leave the email on the server.  The is a mail account that I want to monitor, but want to leave the mail to be downloaded by my computer.

If that setting is there, and I missed it, please let me know.

Thanks.  I've been involved with PC-based email for too long.  On most PC email clients, the email is deleted from the server when the client acknowledges receiving it.

That makes things quite handy.

Fascinating.  Not sure it's logical, but now that I've been enlightened, I can work with it.

Ok, so I'm trying K9 and I just discovered I can't send emails over wifi, but that's ok.  Is there a widget for it, or a way to make the default mail widget go directly to k9?  I'm HOPING for a full size one, that previews the message so I can delete mails from the widget and only  open the program to read full messages that I want or send messages.  I know we can't all have what we want, but the default is close.
